13 billion years ... ( 1 month ago by lendusaquid)
13 billion years does not seem very old to me.If all the galaxies are moving away from us doesnt that put us at the centre of the universe? That does not seem right. We should have galaxies to the side of us going near the same speed as us and also moving away from us at a slow speed. We should also have galaxies coming towards us or keeping pace. That is if everything is moving away from where the big bang happened.

13 billion years does not seem very old to me. Really?
13,730,000,000 (+/ 120 Million yrs) years is not very old? It seems like quite a long time to me!
Also, galaxies cluster into groups. These groups may get closer together & merge due to gravitational attraction, but groups further away will drift away due to the expansion of the universe. Thinking of expansion here like the surface of a balloon being inflated is quite a good way to imagine this drifting apart of these groups.

13 billion years is a lot, consider 2 thousand years and then compare that to 13,730,000,000,000 thousand years.
Also we are not the center of the universe, that's not the point, for a start we are on one of the edges of our own galaxy. But apart from that the point is that everything is spreading out, not moving away from our planet alone.

Science gives the most likely conclusion based on all the evidence, if the evidence changes then the conclusion changes straight away, that makes progress.
Religions are very unwilling to change, the bible gets "tweaked" but the newer versions are again taken as absolute truth. For them to change they would have to consider god word wrong, it's a very awkward situation for them they are lucky the bible is so vague.

Everything is moving away from everything else. Hold your fist together and then spread your fingers. No finger gets closer to another finger. Instead they get more distant from each other, with the distal fingers going even farther away than the proximal.
Same deal with the universe.
Of course, everything was once at the "center" because everything once came from the same place.
The egocentrism that humans display in placing themselves at the core of existence is an evolutionary advantage.

More recently, M Theory and, by proxy string and supergravity theories, have provided insight into the origin of our universe and the possibility of infinite other universes.
Unfortunately, a 500 character limit and lack of doctoral degree in physics are prohibitive of a satisfactory explanation from myself, but I would suggest them as a reasonably good starting point for additional delving into the material.

My question was "Can you direct me to a source for further reading?"
It was a genuine question aimed at getting a recommendation for a book or two, not a snide remark. And didn't require one from you.
I don't think you need a PhD in physics to understand this stuff. So, why would you want me to not try to get more educated? Surely, knowledge is better than no knowledge, right?
Don't bother to reply.

when i was a catholic, i never doubted that the big bang was highly likely to have actually happened, that evolution explained elegantly how life was -and is- formed, and that the old testament was just a fable.
