While famine continues to ravage Somalia, Somali Minnesotans face significant challenges in sending financial support to their loved ones. Banks have declined to assist in the transfer of funds through Hawalas, the community-based financial institutions that are the only practical method to transfer funds to Somalia.Members of the Somali community gathered in front of the Wells Fargo Bank branch at 2600 East Franklin Avenue to move their money as a result of the bank's continued unwillingness to work with the community and their unique financial needs.This video documents an action at a Wells Fargo Bank branch on East Franklin Avenue in the heart of Minneapolis' immgrant community.Minnesotans stood together at the State Capitol on the next day to ask that banks change their policy to help Somali families do what they can to avoid tragedy among their loved ones in Somalia.
